Ngati Pikiao are celebrating their poukai this year at Houmaitawhiti Marae in Rotorua.

The date commemorates the coronation day of Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu. Kiingi Tuheitia agreed to establish poukai in Ngati Pikiao in May 2009.

Some of Ngati Pikiao believe poukai was already established in their area long ago but there is no full explanation as to how it arrived there.
