This poukai was founded by King Koroki in 1947. Its purpose was to recognise the bond between Ngaati Porou and Tainui. Sir Apirana Ngata and Princess Te Puea became close friends and the establishment of the marae was a tribute to Ngata’s rural farming schemes.
