Paaraawera is the oldest poukai established in 1885. After the initial poukai at Whatiwhatihoe, Kiingi Taawhiao moved it to Paaraawera and Te Taumata Marae. Every year the people converged to the front of Taane-i-Rangi-Kapua on the 9th of March.

“Ka tootoo te kai, ka tootoo te tangata”

This is the first of the poukai for the rounds. The rounds are a tour by Kiingi Tuheitia and the iwi, six poukai at six different marae on six consecutive days.
