Taniwha Marae Poukai began in 1964 and commemorates the passing of Tamati Manuwhiri Herangi who is the nephew of Te Puea Herangi. This year Taniwha Marae has recently had reconstruction, therefore this Poukai will be the first since the reconstruction.
