Te Papaorotu Poukai was established in 1926 by Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu.
The date April 10, recognises when Kiingi Te Rata left Waahi in 1916 bound for England.

The purpose of his expedition was to seek redress for the confiscation of lands in the 1860s. While in England, King Te Rata met with King George V, but the officials would not allow Kiingi Te Rata to raise the issue of confiscation.
