Turangawaewae Marae is celebrating their poukai apopo!

Did you know…poukai at Turangawaewae is celebrated annually on 18 March and recognises the opening of Turangawaewae House in 1919. At this opening Te Puea asked for funding support from the ‘First Circle’ of the Kiingitanga to purchase land to establish a marae, which later became Turangawaewae Marae.

Since then, poukai at Turangawaewae have recognised numerous events, including the opening of Mahinaarangi in 1929, Pare Waikato in 1927, Turongo in 1938, as well as the investiture of Te Puea’s CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) and the attendance of many royal visitors and dignitaries.
