Waikare has hosted their Poukai on the first Saturday of December since 1956. King Mahuta had instituted the Poukai at Maurea Marae in 1900.

Later, in the time of King Koroki, this Poukai was established in this area of Ngaati Hine.

The Ngaati Hine of Maurea Marae are close kin of Ngaati Hine of Waikare Marae.

Ngaati Hine is also the name of the meeting house at Waikare.
The purpose of the Waikare Poukai is a celebration of the task of Te Puea. She was instrumental in developing land schemes in this part of the Waikato region.
